First Queen of independent Belgium. Louise of Orléans (Louise-Marie Thérèse Charlotte Isabelle) became the first Queen of the Belgians as the second wife of King Leopold I. They had both a Catholic and a Calvinist ceremony, since Leopold was a Protestant. She personally visited the homes of needy families to bring them financial aid and comfort. On occasion, Queen Louise-Marie did not have enough funds for her charitable works and often borrowed money without telling her husband. Being very shy, she was only seen in public when her husband forced her. She was a beauty and very popular with the Belgian court due to her generosity. She died of tuberculosis.
