James Thomas Crum was the oldest son of Joseph Jode Crum and Ann Elizabeth Hodges. He had an older sister and two younger brothers.
He grew up on a farm in Monroe County Indiana.

On the 5th of November 1891 he married Ella F Burch. He was 22 and his wife was 21. They rented a house in Bloomington and James supported the family as a day laborer, a quarryman and later as a carpenter.

The couple had three children:

Audley C Crum 1892 –
Anna S Crum 1894 – 1975
Opal M Crum 1902 –

They bought a farm on the Whitehall Road.

He died of heart disease in 1941 at the age of 72. Ella lived to the age of 93 and died in 1963.
