Mary Nevada Alderman was the first birth and the first death in Nevada, Iowa. Her burial established the Nevada Cemetery. Her grave was on a distant hill visible from the Alderman cabin (now on the square occupied by the Story County Administration Building) which reminded her mother of her native Ohio. Buried in December, when the spring came, Hannah Alderman had difficulty locating her baby's grave and had her neighbor men mark the grave so she could readily visit the gravesite.
