Lola M. (McGinnis) Hawkins, Rochester, NY: Formerly of Wichita, KS: December 8, 2011. Survived by son, Gilbert Hawkins (wife Judith White Hawkins) and granddaughter Dr. Eleanor Hawkins-Richter. Lola was born in August, 1911, in Udall, Kansas, brought up on a farm to love nature and wide open spaces. She completed studies at the State Teacher's College in Pittsburg, Kansas, and taught elementary school until 1937, when she married fellow Kansan and artist Theodore (Ted) Hawkins. They settled in Wichita, Kansas, where Ted worked at the commercial printing company McCormick Armstrong and where Lola, as a housewife, raised one son, Gilbert. She returned to work after the death of her husband in 1969, as a bookkeeper and later as a staff member of a floral and gift store in Wichita. She retired in 1986 and traveled extensively in North America with her friends. In 1995, she moved to the Village at Park Ridge in Rochester, NY, to be near her family; her last two years were spent at St. Ann's Home in Rochester, where she passed peacefully at age 100. Her relationship with granddaughter Eleanor was a continual joy in her life. She will be remembered fondly by her family and all who knew her. An interment service will be held at the White Chapel Memorial Gardens in Wichita at 11 a.m. on January 14, 2012. Michael R. Yackiw Funeral Home. Published in The Wichita Eagle on January 4, 2012
