William Horace Drake was the third child, and second son, of William Harvey Drake and Ida Mae McKinley. Born in Iowa, he moved with his family to Woods County, Oklahoma, before 1910. He was married to Mary Hester Icke Jones, a widow with a small daughter, Louise, in 1916. The couple started a family while living in Oklahoma, then moved to Taos County, New Mexico. They were the parents of Leona, James Howard, Frances, Elsie, William, Ruby, and Olene.
