The only child of baseball Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio and actress Dorothy Arnold, who married in 1939 and divorced in 1944. Joe Jr. was a U.S. Marine Corps. veteran. He struggled with drug abuse and homelessness during the last 20 years of his life and was estranged from his celebrity father; the two men saw each other infrequently in recent years. However, Joe, Jr. did take part as a pallbearer at his father's funeral in March of '99. Joe Jr. was divorced and had two adopted daughters who were doted on by their grandfather. Joe Sr. set up a trust fund for his son that would pay him $20,000 a year. Joe Jr. was not breathing and had no heartbeat when taken by ambulance to Sutter Delta Medical Center late on a Friday night only five months after his father's death. All attempts to resuscitate him failed and he died at 11:25 pm. The cause of death was listed as "natural causes".
