Anton Schneider, father of Mrs. L. J. Schlindwein of this city died at three o'clock Wednesday morning, March 1st on his 77th birthday anniversary at St. Joseph's Hospital where he had undergone an emergency operation on Tuesday for an obstruction and appendicitis. He rallied from the operation and his death was attributed to a heart attack.
Mt. Schneider had been in his usual good health until Tuesday forenoon when he was suddenly stricken.
Rosary will be recited at the Larkin Chapel Thursday evening at 8 o'clock.
Funeral services will be held Friday at nine o'clock from St. Mary's Church with Rev. Fr. L. W. Klassen officiating. The body will lie in state at the funeral home for an hour so relatives and friends who cannot attend the services can view the body.
Pallbearers will be John Wesels, Ben Holschlag, Frank Kipp, Al Forkenbrock, Jim Malloy and August Kutish.
Internment will be in the family lot at St. John's Cemetery at Bancroft beside his wife and infant daughters.

On Jan. 12, 1897, he was married to Miss Wilhelmina Foth. They established their home on a farm near Bancroft. His wife died Dec. 30, 1908 leaving him with three small children to care for. He remained their until the marriage of his daughter Elizabeth (Mrs. Schlindwein) in 1921 and then went to Calmar to make his home with them. He was employed as a Clerk there for 20 years.
About six years ago he retired and came to New Hampton to again live with the Schlindweins.
Besides his daughter, Mrs. Schlindwein, he is survived by two sons, John of Fort Dodge and Edmund of Dubuque, 15 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Wm. Riley of Dubuque, and one brother, John Schneider of Bancroft.
He was preceded in death by three daughters who died in infancy and his wife.

My Mother (Mary Jane Schlindwein Fliger) often told me stories about how her Grandfather Anton lived with them for periods of time while Mom was growing up. She said he was a good-hearted, quiet man who enjoyed being around children, and always had a kind word for people.
Great-grandpa Anton was often sad that his youngest son, Edmund, wasn't close to the family and they often went years without hearing from him.
Edmund married Mae Petrik in 1924, Leatrice Helen "Leah" Schneider was born in 1925, and Edmund and Mae divorced in the early 1930s. Leah was adopted by her stepfather. I am told by Leah's granddaughter that Leah had no contact with Edmund.
I've uncovered some information in researching Edmund but I do not know when or where he passed away. I have seen reports of his death on 1 Jun 1957 in Cook County, Illinois; 1957 in Iowa; 1961 unknown location but possibly Dubuque area; 1976 unknown location; Apr 1976 unknown location. The last evidence I find of Edmund was the 1952 Polk's Directory for Dubuque, Iowa, which states he lived at 524 Central Avenue and worked as a store clerk. My Mother reported that "Edmund moved a lot."

My Grandma Lizzie gave me the photograph of her with parents, grandfather and brothers in their chicken yard in 1964. She told me all about life on the farm and how sad it was after her mother died in 1909. She said her father adored her mother and could never think of remarrying even though he was relatively young and had three young children.
My Mother always told me this phoyograph was taken after my Great-Grandmother Minnie and the woman on the right side was the hired housekeeper. I've studied this photo with a magnifying glass and based on the birth years of the children (Lizzie in 1898, John in 1902, Edmund in 1904) I feel this photo was taken before Great-Grandma Minnie's death in 1908. In fact, this might be the last photo of Minnie and I'm guessing it was taken around 1907.
