Jesse was my g grandfather.
Jesse was born in Missouri and lived there up until the age of 14 years old. Jesse moved with his mother, Tabitha Agnes McKinney Burns, and some of his siblings to California in 1898. Jesse's father was supposed to follow them out to California at a later date but never did. It is unknown why Jesse's father never came out to California. Jesse lived the rest of his life in California, never returning to Missouri (as far as I know). Jesse eventually came to live in Arroyo Grande, Ca. where he met and married my g grandmother, Nancy Elizabeth Haun on 10 May 1908.
In 1912 Jesse, Nancy and the first three of their four children (Beth, Thelma and Robert) were living at 1135 Marsh St., San Luis Obispo, Ca. Jesse was working as a barber at the "Palace Barber Shop" in San Luis Obispo, Ca. My father still has some of the brushes and cups that he used to shave men. Another employer was Pfleghaar and Anderson barber. I am not sure yet if they were the owner's of the Palace barber shop or not. The addresses that Jesse and Nancy lived at in San Luis Obispo were 546 Higuera St. and 1135 Marsh St. They also lived in a house on Santa Rosa St. and that is where their fourth child, my grandma Lillian, was born.
Sometime shortly after Lillian was born the family moved to the Central Valley of California to the Union Oil Company pump station called Middle Water where Jesse ran the pump station and Nancy ran the cook house. Then the family moved to the Coalinga pump station and then to the pump station at McKittrick Ca.
According to the 1940 United States Census Jesse, Nancy and their son Robert were living in a house that Jesse and Nancy owned at 600 Fillmore St., Ford City (Taft), Ca. He worked for the Honolulu Oil Company.
Jesse worked mainly in the oil fields in Central California. Nancy and Jesse spent most of their married life living in the Central Valley of California. Jesse worked for the Union Oil pipeline as a manager/supervisor. Jesse had a group of men that worked under him. This group could range anywhere from 5 to 20 men. Nancy ran the cookhouse that fed all of these men. Nancy fed them 3 meals a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. She made everything from scratch. This would include but not be limited to pies, cakes, breads etc... Not very much came from a box. These were hard working men that she had to feed and they ate hearty meals. Jesse supervised all of these men and had to make sure they had done their jobs correctly. This was very hard work for Jesse and Nancy. Nancy and Jesse raised four children while working for the oil company. Jesse's last job before retiring was working as a Plant Operator for the Honolulu Oil Company.
Also, from examples that I have seen that my g grandmother showed to me, Jesse had beautiful penmanship. I have included a picture of a card on which Jesse wrote his wife's, my grandmother's, name.
Nancy and Jesse retired and eventually made their way back to Arroyo Grande. They enjoyed their retirement years and eventually came to live in a home on my mother and father's property in Arroyo Grande. My father is their grandson. Jesse passed away about 6 months after I was born and was laid to rest in Arroyo Grande. Jesse had accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior a few years before he passed away. Nancy was a believer in Jesus Christ herself.
I know that Jesse was a great man and that his family loved him dearly.
Nancy and Jesse had four children: Jessie Elizabeth Burns-Smith (Frank), Thelma Belle Burns-Mayhall (Charles), Robert Ormonde Burns (Lucille) and my grandmother Lillian Mae Burns-Duffin (Tommie).
