Music critic. A noted music critic, he produced sketches of London life by Charles Dickens in the "Evening Chronicle Sketches", whom was later to become his son-in-law. From 1846-1866 he was music critic of the "Daily News" and of the "Illustrated London News". He was also Secretary of the Philarmonic Society from 1850-1864. He published "Musical History", "Biography and Criticism" (1835) and other works on music.
