Born Nov. 14, 1921, in Canton, Ill., he lived in Escondido for 27 years. He was a manufacturing engineer.
He served in the U.S. Navy as a pilot and navigator during World War II and received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Purple Heart and a Presidential Unit Citation.
He was a member of the San Diego Distinguished Flying Cross Society, the Methodist Men and various church groups. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a bachelor's degree in science and engineering and also an MBA.
He was a member of Theta Xi fraternity. He enjoyed genealogy and published two genealogy books.
Mr. Barnett is survived by his wife of 57 years, Margaret Barnett of Escondido; son Don Barnett Jr. of Temecula; daughters and sons-in-law Elizabeth Anne and James Rode of Garden Grove and Laura Ruth and Karl Olsen of San Diego; brother and sister-in-law James and Ethel Barnett of Elksville, Ill.; and grandchildren Kristen, Rachel, Kendra and Angela.
Inurnment was held at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, at Oak Hill Memorial Park with the Rev. Faith Conklin officiating.
A memorial service followed at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist church, 341 S. Kalmia St. in Escondido with the Rev. Conklin officiating.
The family suggests donations to the First United Methodist Church Foundation, 341 S. Kalmia St., Escondido, CA 92025.
