PORTLAND -- Kaye Learned Elliott, 69, of Rumford Center, died Monday, May 31, 2010 at Maine Medical Center in Portland following a long and courageous battle with lung disease. She was born in Rumford on Jan. 12, 1941, the daughter of Howard A. and Kathryn G. (Walker) Learned. Kaye was educated in Rumford schools and was a graduate of Stephens High School Class of 1959, and served on the Class Reunion Committee since graduation. She then attended Boston University for one year and received an associate's degree from Westbrook Junior College in 1961.
Kaye married Jim Elliott on Feb. 25, 1961, and together they celebrated 41 years of marriage and raised three children. She worked for a few years at Oxford Paper Co., and then took off several years to raise her family. Kaye then returned to the work force as a Teacher's Assistant at Meroby Elementary School in Mexico, until her retirement in 2003. She was a communicant of Parish of the Holy Savior. She enjoyed card making for the holidays and special events for family and friends.
Many family gatherings and holidays were spent at her home or camp. She thrived on the love and laughter and was always looking forward to the next special occasion. Kaye loved vacationing with Jim along the Maine coast, especially the Belfast region, and they continued this tradition with their family. Surviving are a son, James R. Elliott Jr. and wife Beth of Scarborough, two daughters, Angela J. Coulombe and husband Christian of Winn, and Marny E. Witas and husband Earl Jr. of Scarborough; a sister, Gayle L. Bean and husband Harry of Bryant Pond; five grandchildren, Aaron Coulombe, Corey Coulombe, Katherine Elliott, Samuel Elliott, and Andrew Witas; many nieces, nephews; great-nieces, great-nephews; and loving extended family members.
