Sarah Miller Silk, 89, of Forest, died Saturday, May 29, 2010. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on July 15, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Rose Smith Miller and Francis X. Miller. Her husband, Edmond J. Silk, and her sister, Rose M. Shields, also preceded her in death.

Sally was a 1942 chemistry graduate from St. Josephs College for Women in Brooklyn, N.Y. As a chemical engineer on the Manhattan Project, she participated in work essential to the production of the atomic bomb. Sally and her husband later settled in Lynchburg, where Ed worked for Babcock and Wilcox. After raising her family, she taught at Seven Hills School, eventually receiving her master's degree in science from Randolph-Macon Women's College in 1972.

A member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, she loved singing in the choir for many years. She also enjoyed traveling, playing golf and bridge with her friends.

Sally is survived by her children, Joan Tichacek and Richard Silk, both of Lynchburg, and Barbara Magaddino and her husband, Joseph, of Santa Ana, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Robert Tichacek Jr., Amanda Tichacek, Catherine (Justin) Sibiski, Peter (Nicole) Magaddino, Katharine (Christopher) Reese, Sarah (Andrew) Kuhlman and Michael Magaddino; one great-granddaughter, Olivia Sibiski; four nieces, Carol Kelly, Rosemary Shields, Janet (James) McCroskery and Marguerite (Randy) Roussine; and two nephews, Charles (Debbie) Shields and Francis (Nancy) Shields.

The family thanks the staff of Valley View Assisted Living for the love and care they gave Sally. They helped fill her days with companionship and fun.
