Lafayette (my paternal great-grandfather) was the first-born child of Harmon Alcorn and Elvira Smith Alcorn who married on June 8, 1856 in DeKalb Co., TN. The couple moved to MO where Lafayette was born in 1858.
On February 3, 1885 he married Alice Louisiana Love in Iron Co., MO. They had 7 children: Lola (Alcorn) Buntin, Roy Anvil, Clyde S., Scott Lee (my grandfather), Ora, Myrtle (she died as either a newborn or infant) & Charles Loven.
In 1908, Lafayette served in the U.S. House of Representatives representing Carter Co., MO.
His obituary appeared in the 10-20-1949 issue (pg. 1, column 6) of The Current Local, Van Buren, Carter Co., MO and read:
"Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist Church here Friday, for Lafayette Alcorn, age 91.
The funeral sermon was given by Rev. C. A. Love of Van Buren and interment was at the Henson Cemetery.
Mr. Alcorn was a son of Harmon and Elvia (Elvira) Alcorn. He was born in Stone County, Missouri, July 31, 1858, and died October 12, 1949 at the home of his son, Roy, at Fredericktown, Missouri.
As a young man he was a school teacher, and in later years, he engaged in the Mercantile business at Belgrade, Missouri. More than 40 years ago he came with his family to Carter County, and for a long number of years he was in the mercantile business at Ellsinore.
In 1908 he was elected to the Missouri Legislature as Representative of Carter County, where he served for some time.
He was married February 3, 1885 to Miss Alice Love in Washington County. She preceded him in death seven years ago.
To this union was born seven children, Lola, Roy, Clyde, Scott, Ora, Charles Loven, and Myrtle. Only two of his children survived him, Mrs. Lola Buntin of Grandin, and Roy Alcorn of Fredericktown.
Mr. Alcorn was among the most well known citizens of Carter County. He was a man of high ideals, and many years ago he became a devoted christian and had read the Bible thru several times, and enjoyed talking about the Scriptures and what they meant to him.
He is also survived by eleven granchildren: Mrs. Mildred Magill of Cheyenne, WY; Percy Alcorn, Grand Junction, CO, Miss Dorothy Alcorn, Fredericktown, MO; Walter Ray Alcorn, U.S. Army Air Force; Billy Joe, Donald Lee, and Roy, all of Ellsinore; Merton of Poplar Bluff; Cecil of Williamsville; Dennis of Fredericktown; and Scottie of St. Louis.
The last six named grandsons served as pallbearers at the funeral service.
