Civil War Union Rear-Admiral. Spent much of his Civil War career chasing after Rebel Raphael Semmes and his raider 'Alabama'. Winslow had entered the navy in 1827 and by the time of the firing on Fort Sumter was a lieutenant. He was promoted to Captain on July 16, 1862, and given command of the U.S.S. 'Kearsarge'. He finally caught up with the 'Alabama' and Semmes in 1864 just outside of Cherbourg harbor in France. The raider had taken sanctuary there for repair work and refueling. Setting up a blockade, Winslow learned that Semmes was preparing to come out and fight. The battle took place on June 19th, after Winslow made sure they were out of French territorial waters. After eighty minutes the 'Alabama' was forced to lower her colors. The glow of victory was somewhat diminished for Winslow when Semmes escaped on a British yacht. The 'Alabama' soon sank and Winslow became a hero.
