Born in Adona, AR on December 28, 1911, she was a daughter of the late Felix H. and Minnie Yancey Douthit. Mrs. Carpenter was a member of the Fourth Avenue United Methodist Church in Louisville, KY and a former member of the First United Methodist Church of Laurens. She retired from the Department of Defense as a Contracting Officer and Purchasing Agent. Mrs. Carpenter served in Saigon, Vietnam, for 18 months and retired from Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, DC, in 1975. She was also a member of the Eastern Star for 78 years, a former member and president of the Greenwood SC National Association of Retired Federal Employees and member of the Louisville, KY chapter; and a former member of the VFW Auxiliary 3354.
Surviving are two daughters, Davalene Burch of Louisville, KY and Martha Ann Goad of Laurens; seven grandchildren, Patricia B. Jacobs of Nashville, TN, Paul H. Burch, Philip A. Burch and Phyllis Jean Burch all of Louisville, KY, Perry J. Burch of CA, Lou Ann Wakeland of Laurens and Elizabeth Love Hatfield of Severn, MD; sister, H. Louise Gregory of Rockville, MD; six great-grandchildren, Timothy Anderson, Michael L. Taylor, John P. Burch, Ryan J. Burch, Melissa Mayorga, and Marla Mayorga; and three great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Tuesday, June 1, 2010, at The Kennedy Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. Charlie Short followed by a private committal in Forest Lawn Cemetery with Eastern Star Rites.
The family will be at the home of her daughter, Martha Ann Goad, 605 S. Harper St., Laurens and will receive friends Monday at The Kennedy Mortuary from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.
