William was born in White Feather, Bay County, Michigan - a railroad town a few miles north of Pinconning that no longer exists. William had two sisters, Cora Edith, born in Indiana in April 1877, that married William Henry Summerfield, and Mamie, born 1881, in Indiana, and died on December 20, 1884, in Pinconning.

William's father's name was John William Delos Ellsworth and is variously listed as John W (William's birth record), James (sister's death record), John Delos and Delos John. He was born in New York in September of 1845. William's mother's name was Mary Fisher (sometimes referred to as "May"), born in England and died in 1883.

After Mary's death, James remarried to Henrietta "Etta" Lema (also listed as "Lemma"), born December 1863 in Michigan, and had two more known children, half-siblings to William: Rose May also spelled "Mae"), born March 6, 1885, in Bay City, died October 6, 1929, Sparta, Kent County, Michigan; and, Paul Harry ("Harry"), born September 21, 1889, West Bay City, died April 22, 1970, Kenosha, Kenosha County, Wisconsin.

Rose May first married Jay L. Worth on September 14, 1918, in Meskegon, Muskegon County, Michigan. Nearly two years later, on June 26, 1920, in that same county, she married Ralph Eugene Englewright.

Harry married Elmina (Almena) Bourdeau on May 18, 1910, in Hubbell, Houghton County, Michigan, and later lived in Wisconsin, first in Somers, Kenosha County, and then Kenosha, Kenosha County, where Harry and Almena died (the latter on August 13, 1975). Elmina's father is listed as Lucien Bourdeau on the marriage certificate with the mother's name listed as "unknown." The witnesses were Lucien and one Anna Lacompte. Harry and Elmina's known children include: Geraldine; John; Dorothy I; Robert W; and, James
