MONTPELIER — Margo Lynn Bentsen Matthews, 55, passed away at her home in Montpelier on Sunday, March 3, 2002, after a long fight with emphysema. She was born March 16, 1946, in Montpelier to Alfred Jens Bentsen and Pauline Barkdull Bentsen .

She married Edward L. Shepherd and from this union they had two children, Edward "Jens" Matthews and Tracy. They were later divorced. On September 17, 1972, she married John R. Matthews.

Margo was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She loved growing flowers and crocheting.

Margo is survived by her husband, John; daughter, Tracy; two sisters, RaeAnn and Brandon Dennis Wilcox , Wendy Ann Bentsen Smith and Tim Smith; one brother-in-law, Roger Dee Toomer; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, A. J. "Cub" Bentsen and Pauline Bentsen her son, Edward "Jens" Matthews , and her sister, Nancy Lee Bentsen Toomer .

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 7 at 1 p.m. in the Montpelier LDS Fourth Ward Chapel, 485 South Seventh Street, where friends may call that day from 10:30 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. Burial will be in the Montpelier Cemetery, with services under the direction of Matthews Mortuary.

ALL VISITS ARE VERY APPRECIATED

Margo will be remembered most for her big heart and her patience. She worked at various jobs throughout her life, but the thing she loved most was being a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking for her family. She would get the "army" pot to make vegetable beef soup, chicken and noodles, or chili, then call her sisters, nieces, nephews and various others to invite them to dinner. She always cooked or baked for the masses, never knowing who was going to show up hungry. Margo also had a special talent for gardening. She could make anything grow. She worked at the local greenhouse for many years, and helped the Ladies Auxiliary plant flowers each Spring at the Bear Lake Memorial Hospital. She grew a beautiful rose garden in her back yard and provided roses for family and friends all through the summers. People from all over town would walk by her house just to admire the flowers that filled her porch and yard. Each Fall she would make a trip to Utah to get tomatoes, peaches and pears to bottle for distribution to family and friends during the winters. She also loved to crochet beautiful afghans for her family. She can best be described as an "unorganized Martha Stewart."
Margo loved animals. Her home was literally a zoo. She always had several cats and dogs that she called her "kids." Every stray in town knew where to go to find a good home. We sometimes wished that we were one of Margo's "kids." She also had several aquariums full of tropical fish, some of whom she had bred.
Margo was dealt many hardships in her life, but her biggest challenge and heartache occurred in 1971 when her beloved Jens was diagnosed with an incurable brain disease. In opposition to the doctors' advice, she chose to care for Jens at home. The next 11 years were extremely hard for her, but with the help of family and friends, she managed to raise a very happy boy until the last few months of his life. At that point Jens had to be hospitalized because she could no longer give him the medical attention he required. He passed away just before his 17th birthday. During this time her daughter was also diagnosed with health problems. Since Margo was never blessed with the grandchildren she had hoped for, she opened her heart and her home to anything with two or four legs. Margo enjoyed going fishing, camping and taking trips to the Oregon coast, as she loved the ocean, but she was truly happiest when spending time with the family. She enjoyed a very full and busy life until the two years prior to her passing, when her declining health forced her to give up many of the things she loved.
She used to tell us she wished she had done something important in her life to make a difference in the world. To all of us that knew and loved her she made a big difference in our lives. She has left an enormous void that we will never fill. We love and miss her very much. She was an exceptional lady!

WHAT IS A MOM
A mom is one of life's best gifts,
Someone to treasure all life through,
She's caring and loving,
Thoughtful and true,
Someone who is always a special part of your life,
Someone who holds a prime place in your heart,
She's a mentor, a confident and also a friend,
Someone on whose love you can depend.
A mom always has your best interests at heart,
She's someone so dear and so good,
She's a blessing, she's a gift,
She's a treasure like no other,
She's someone that is truly wonderful.
Wherever you go, and whatever you do,
A mom's love will always see you through,
A mom is truly invaluable,
Indispensable and unforgettable.
I wouldn't want anyone but you,
And that's why I'm so grateful,
that life picked you for my mom.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
IN MEMORY OF MY MOM
You were a precious gift from God above,
so much beauty, grace and love.
You touched our hearts in so many ways,
your smile so bright even on the bad days.
You heard God's whisper calling you home,
you didn't want to go and leave us alone.
You loved us so much, you held on tight,
till all the strength was gone and you could no longer fight.
He had called your name twice before,
you knew you couldn't make him wait anymore.
So you gave your hand to God and slowly drifted away,
knowing that with our love we will be together again some day.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
MOTHER
You may own a million dollars,
But your, are the poorest in the land
if you don't have your beloved mom
to clasp your lonely hand.
Though her smile is gone forever
and her hand you cannot touch
still we have many memories
of our mom we loved so much.

This is our keepsake, with which
We'll never part;
God has her in his keeping-
We have her in are hearts.
So, You who have a mother
Cherish her with care
For you'll never know the heartache
'Til she's no longer there.'

DEAR MOTHER MINE IN HEAVEN
Some time has passed by
Since Mom you said goodbye
But your precious deep love
Remains here inside of me.

My memory can call you
To front stage center acting,
You're so familiar neat ways
Then you're alive again to me.

Oh how I wish I could call,
That you would pick up the phone,
I would do it if I could
But the phone is dead to Heaven.

I knew you were ready to go
And you had a very full life
But I miss you so very much,
Greet me, please, at Heaven door.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
THINKING OF YOU
I miss you so much. Everyday I expect the phone
to ring or a letter to come, but it doesn't.

I hope you know how much I love you and even
though you have passed from this life you are
forever in my heart.
You were such a fine young person ready to share
with the world all the talents you had. I count my
blessings to have had you here as long as I did
but I wish it was longer.

Love Always And More,
I Love And Miss You,
With All Of My Love,
Love Your Daughter

LAST FIGHT
A face that is always on my mind,
A smile I have seen a million times,
Two eyes that would light up the sky at night,
One last battle you could not fight,
The day was long, then night then morn.
I knew that soon you would be gone,
I clasped your hand so warm in mine,
Soon we would be out of time,
To stay with us you fought so hard,
A million pieces went my heart,
Now a photo I look at to see your smile,
I keep your number on my speed dial,
A video I watch to hear your voice,
This I do.... I have no choice.,
But great memories I will always keep with me,
Your love in my heart for eternity,
I never got to say goodbye,
To understand why, I can but try,
Waiting in heaven from this moment on,
'Till god asks you to bring me home....
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I remember everything about you,
your voice, your smile, your touch,
the way you walked, the way you talked,
the way you looked at me, meant so much.
I remember all the words you said to me,
some funny, some kind, some wise,
all of the things you did for me,
I see now with different eyes.
I remember every moment we shared,
seems like only yesterday,
or maybe it was eons ago,
It's really hard to say.
You are gone from me now,
but one thing they can't take away,
your memory resides inside my heart,
and lights up my darkest days.
