John Annis was born in 1835 at Elsmire, Denmark. He enlisted on December 20, 1861 at Houlton, ME and was mustered into government service on January 1, 1862. He was described as 5' 7", blue eyes, fair hair, single, and a laborer residing at Houlton. John was "slightly wounded" at the Battle of Gettysburg, and promoted to Corporal in December 1864. He was mustered out of the 6th Light Artillery Regiment Maine on 17 Jun 1865 at Augusta, ME.

He died as a result of drowning at Portland, ME in 1868 and is buried at Forest City Cemetery, Section D, Lot 5, Portland, ME, a "soldiers lot".
