Son of Paul Chiles Jr. and Sarah Collins Chiles Perry. Census records show James to have been born circa 1843 and living in 1880 in District 10, Giles, Tennessee.

James married Alice C. Dugger, daughter of William and Cyrena Teresa Wilkes Dugger, on 22 Oct 1883 in Marshall County, Tennessee.

"Diana
Mr. Jim Chiles, one of our Best citizens, died last Thursday. How fresh in the memory is the recollection of the loveliness of the departed. All that was mortal is changed now, but how great is our comfort in the assurance that the Good Shepherd who careth for this flock has taken our friend into his fold. May a higher than human power console and support his bereaved companion.
