Frank Anderson Chisholm died on Monday, June 9, 2008, at his home in Vernonburg surrounded by his devoted family. Frank was born August 24, 1910 at his family's home on Jones Street in Savannah, Ga.
He was the son of Elsie Barnard and Frank Miller Chisholm. Mr. Chisholm attended Pape School before enrolling in Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire, where he graduated in 1928. He graduated from Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut in 1932. Frank embarked on his career at the height of the Great Depression. He had planned to work with his uncle on Wall Street but the crash prevented it. He came home and went into business with his good friend Sam Varnedoe and established Varnedoe, Chisholm and Company, which later became Varnedoe, Chisholm and Skinner. After 41 successful years the company merged with Robinson- Humphrey, which is now Smith Barney. He continued working until he retired in 1997.
Mr. Chisholm served in the U. S. Navy during World War II with duty in the Pacific as skipper of the LCI 816. He participated in the invasion of Okinawa and the occupation of Japan after V-J Day.
Frank was the longest active member of the St. Andrew's Society where he was a member for 75 years. He also served as president during the 200th anniversary of that organization. He was past president of the Georgia Society of the Cincinnati and past President General of the National Society - the nation's oldest hereditary and patriotic organization. He was also a member of the Georgia Society of Colonial Wars. Frank was past president of the Savannah Benevolent Association, a trustee of Savannah Country Day School, and also of St. Andrews-on-the-Marsh. He served as president of The Oglethorpe Club, The Cotillion Club, and the Century Club, and was a member of the Savannah Golf Club, the Savannah Yacht Club, and The Chatham Club. Frank was a member of The Independent Presbyterian Church for 85 years where his family attended for many generations. He served as an Elder for 36 years, was Chairman of the Trustees for 25 years, and was later named Trustee Emeritus.
Mr. Chisholm loved hunting, fishing, tending his camellia garden and traveling. He truly loved turkey hunting and spent many memorable mornings with his son pursuing them at their farm in Screven County. He once got two in one shot! Most of all, he was devoted to his family. He was dearly loved by each one.
Frank is survived by his wife of 52 years; his son and his wife; his four daughters and their husbands; eleven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; his sister-in-law; his niece; and his nephew and his wife.
The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Thursday morning at Independent Presbyterian Church (Bull Street and Oglethorpe Avenue) with a reception following. The burial service will be private.
