Jacob was was born into a large military family. His brother John
was a Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. His brother David was a Major Staff General and one of the "Immortal 600'. Brothers Henry Clay, Dewitt and Samuel also served. But Jacob had dreams of gold in the West and was one of the first pioneers of Mariposa County, CA. He served four terms as Justice of the Peace in Hornitos Township from 1863-1866. In 1873, he moved to Merced, CA, his business being that of a builder and contractor. He married Julia Thorpe and they had eight children.
