On August 22, 1862 at Locust Grove, Ohio he enlisted to fight in the Civil War, serving in Company E, 1st Ohio. He was dischared at Knoxville, Tennessee on June 20, 1865.
At age 66 he was 5'9" tall, and had blue eyes. Perhaps it was those blue eyes that attracted his wife, Emily Patterson, to him. They were married in Ohio where most of their children were born, settling finally in Missouri.
He is the 2nd great-grandfather of the contributor of this memorial, Melissa (Springer) Robards.
