Obituary:
On May 19, 1865, in a log cabin west of Palestine, Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Cloyd were blessed with a son who they named Sampson. James Cloyd, Sampson's grandfather, was one of the first of the early settlers to come to German township, now Liberty township.
In 1886, at the age of 21, Sampson became a member of the Church of Christ in Palestine where his membership has remained through the years. He lived his entire 87 years in this section following farming and painting. On November 11, 1891, Sampson was united in holy matrimony with Laura A. Lewis. Mr. L.A. McGrew, the officiating minister, later gave his life on the mission field.
Sampson Cloyd was the last of the charter members of the Knights of Pythias lodge in Hollansburg, which later merged with the Palestine lodge. Mr. and Mrs. Cloyd were blessed with six children, five of whom are living today. Paul Lewis Cloyd died at the age of two. The other children are Opal Cloyd Mindling, Nelson Eugene Cloyd, Chester LaVerne Cloyd, Earl Emerson Cloyd, and Garnet May Wade.
The eleven grandchildren are Rodney and Dwight Mindling, Marion Wolnosky, Elizabeth Armstrong, Alice Cloyd, Duane, Darrel, and Linda Wade, Julia Hinshaw, and Sandra and James Cloyd. The six great-grandchildren are Gayle, Carl, and Kathleen Mindling, Carolyn, James, and Judy Wolnosky.
Sampson Cloyd, who had two brothers and two sisters, is the last of the immediate family.
Loved ones, who remain, will cherish the memory of Sampson Cloyd as a patient, kind, and amiable man. He was not one to complain, but rather one who had a most agreeable disposition. To the day of his death he was well-read, still possessing a keen and alert mind.
Now he abides in the trust and keeping of the Lord.
