Los Angeles Mayor. He was elected the 35th mayor of Los Angeles, California after his predecessor Frank L. Shaw was recalled because of corruption. He served from 1938 to 1953 as the Los Angeles mayor for 15 years, making him the second longest-serving mayor in the city's history after Tom Bradley (1973 to 1993). He attended the University of Southern California (USC) School of Law and before receiving certification as a lawyer, he worked as a reporter for newspapers in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Oakland. He is credited as the major force in cleaning up the city government of links to racketeering, graft, prostitution and gambling. He served on the Los Angeles County Superior Court bench for a total of 20 years before and after his mayoral term. His death occurred at the age of eighty one while driving when upon suffering a heart attack, his car suddenly accelerated, drove into a parking lot and crashed into a brick wall. He was honored by the city as the first and only mayor to lie in state in the rotunda of Los Angeles City Hall. Fletcher Bowron Square located in the L.A. Civic Center is dedicated to his memory as well as Bowron Road in the city of his birth, Poway, California.
