"Fred" was the son of Lester F. Sr. and Anna C. (MacAuley) Boyce. He graduated from Brookline (Mass.) High School, earned his bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College (Amos Tuck School of Business) and received a degree from Bangor Theological Seminary.

He was a U.S. Marine Corp veteran of World War II.

He was employed as a CPA for Price Waterhouse for several years and left to teach at the University of Connecticut.

From 1958-1961, he was the editor of the Journal of Accountancy and later returned to teach accounting at the University of Maine-Orono through the 1970s. In the mid-1980s, he taught at Truman State in Missouri until his retirement in 1991.

IN HIS LIFE: He was a contributor to the Encyclopedia Americana, having published more than 50 articles.

In his earlier years, he was an avid mountain climber and member of the Appalachian Mountain Club. In addition, he enjoyed dining out and was a voracious reader.

Family members include a daughter, Heather Weihl of Seattle, Wash; and a close friend, Joan Holt of Milford.
