Verna M. Borton
Verna M. Borton, 88, of Nevada, Iowa died Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids of compound injuries sustained in an automoblie accident on Aprel 1. Funeral services were held Saturday, April 20 at 10:30 a.m. at Memorial Lutheran Church, Nevada, with Pastor Myron D. Herzberg officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Memory Gardens near Nevada.

Verna M. Borton was born June 18, 1913 in rural Zearing to Willie E. and Gurine (Vallem) Michaelson. She attended school in northern Iowa and southern Minnesota and graduated from Scarville, Iowa, High School in 1932. She married Roy Earl Borton on March 7, 1934 in Thompson, Iowa. She shared in her husband's farming interests in the Garden City, Shipley and Fernald areas before moving to Milford Township in 1947.

Verna was a member of the Memorial Lutheran Church, Ruth Circle, PTA president, a 4-H leader, quilted with Story City St. Petri Church, was a Milford Happy Hour Club member, and a Story County RSVP worker. She was an avid sports fan - local, ISU and U. of I. She enjoyed gardening and making sure her grandchildren were involved in various activities. Since 1965, Verna has sponsored a Story County 4-H Garden and Ag Award.

Survivors include one son, Arthur Borton and wife Donna of Nevada; two daughters, Jurine Borton Moore of Mt. Vernon, Iowa, and Florine Smalley and husband Merrill of Iowa City; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four sisters, Dorothy Woodbury of Arlington, Virginia Mildred Murray of Moline, Illinois, June Egland of Story City, and Virginia Marshall of Canyon Lake, California; three sisters-in-law, Betty Michaelson, Julia Borton Cooling, and Sara Borton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents; husband Roy on Jan. 27, 1965; three brothers, Gordon, Milford, and Orlo Michaelson; four sisters, Blanche Ryerson, Winifred Bond, Fern Marsh, and Laura Settle.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the Memorial Lutheran Church.
