TRAVERSE CITY - Jacob Aftanas, 91, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center.
Born Aug. 20, 1908, in Arnold, Pa., he was the son of Stephen and Nellie (Derkatz) Aftanas. On Sept. 20, 1930, in McKees Rocks, Pa., he married Anna Mudryk.
A truck driver for Alcoa Aluminum Co., he had lived in Traverse City since 1996 and was a previous resident of Sterling Heights. Before then, Jacob was a resident of Arnold, Pa., where he was a member of St. Vladimire Ukrainian Catholic Church and served as a volunteer firefighter for the Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, of which he was a life member.
Survivors include a son, Jacob (Barbara) R. Aftanas of Interlochen; two sisters, Mary Strejcek of Florida and Anna Zamparinie of Lower Burrell, Pa.; a brother, Joseph (Louise) Aftanas of South Carolina; two granddaughters, Lynn Marie (Mitchell) Sioma of Sterling Heights and Lori Ann Aftanas of Detroit; two grandsons, Paul Joseph (April) Aftanas of Walled Lake and Aaron James Aftanas of Clinton Township; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Jacob was preceded in death by his wife, Anna, on Nov. 4, 1995; two brothers, Stanley and Stephen Aftanas; and a sister, Rosie Kowalski.
Memorial services are being planned. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Lower Burrell, Pa.
Memorials may be directed to the charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City.
