We can't be sure why the earlier names are spelled Bird and the latter Byrd. It could be whoever wrote for them, as that is often the case. His first name is definitely misspelled on the marker; makes me wonder if the engraver's first language was Spanish. The census records are also spelled as Bird. His wife's older stone says Bird.
