Son of Rev. Benjamin and Abigail (Riggs) Chapman. He served six months, at least, in the Revolutionary War commencing in 1780 in a company of "Levies" (conscripted men) under Capt. Theophilus Monson and Lt. Col. Isaac Sherman, 8th Connecticut Regiment. His name is among those paid by the town for services during the Revolution. The Chapman Family notes that Benjamin Chapman lived, for a time, in Russell, Mass (his oldest son, Roswell, was born in Blandford, MA in 1794) and then moved to Worthington, Ohio, where he died.

Benjamin Chapman's will was signed March 6, 1823 and proven in June 1823, indicating he died the year before many family genealogical records state. Similarly, Benjamin Chapman's widow, Sylvia (Upson) Chapman, did not die in 1823 as has been previously reported, but was still alive in 1830, head of household on the family property in Sharon Township, Franklin County, near Worthington, and died sometime before 1840.

He married 1) 23 Nov 1786 Polly Cook; 2) Sylvia Upson on 25 Sep 1792
