Before the Civil War, he was a member of the Governor's Mounted Guard. During the war, he became 1st Lieutenant of Company I, Fourth Virginia Cavalry - CSA. He is the son of Jean and Viola Barault Bossieux, immigrants from France.

This add ran in the Richmond Daily Dispatch in 1862;

--Strayed from the 4th Regiment Virginia Cavalry, at Camp Ewell, near Manassas, a bay Mare, six years old, star in forehead, thick set, in good order, bushy mane and tail, and one hind leg a little larger than the other, Raise her mane and you will see where it has been trimmed underneath. I will give the above reward to any one returning the above-described mare to me, or for any information which will enable me to get her.
