Mr Ernest Mayes was a lifelong member of the Stanley community and was a hard and industrious worker on the N & W railroad for over 20 yrs. He was a loyal member of the oddfellows lodge in Luray, Va. He was married to Artie Lessie Nauman on August 1st 1901. they had 10 children in their 40 yrs of marriage. Mr Ernest Mayes was also a "Real" Sons of Confederate Veteran as His father James H Mayes was a member of the 7th Va Cav Page County Co D. Mr Mayes was only 9 yrs old when his father developed consumptuion and passed away leaving Mr Ernest Mayes and his brothers and sisters at a very young age. For this alone he had to be a brave and noble man.
