Ensign R. B. Read, USNRF, was designated Naval Aviator #78 in 1917. Served in France and Italy during the World War. Awarded a Navy Cross, and the War Cross by Italy. Released from active service in 1919 and discharged in 1921, with rank of Lieut. (Junior Grade).

Killed in crash of his private plane, along with two others, at night near Amsterdam, NY. Was divorced, no children.

Was a member of the second group of First Yale Unit.

Youngest of four brothers of Naval Aviators, Ensign Curtis Seaman Read (1895-1918) and twin, Captain William Augustus Read, Jr (1895-1976), and Captain Duncan Hicks Read (1896-1998).
