James was a shoemaker by trade, but by 1877 had opened the first post office substation in Walsingham, ON, Canada, which included a telegraphy office and his shoemaker's shop.

Ten children were born to James and Sarah in Ontario. By ~1880 James and Sarah, and all but four of the surviving children of both marriages had moved to Michigan, USA, where most worked in the logging industry or took up farming.

James died of heart failure while at work in his shoemaker's shop in central Bridgeport, MI. The descendants and relatives of James' two families now number in the multi-thousands, with many of those remaining in Michigan.
