In Loving Memory of John S. Crooker...

Excerpt from page 92 of "History of Litchfield and an account of its centennial celebration, 1895" (Augusta, Maine: Kennebec Journal Print, 1897):

"John S. Crooker, son of Zaccheus and Polly (Merritt) Crooker, and grandson of ***Isaiah and Hannah Crooker, was born in Bath, Me., August 20, 1815. He married Susan Curtis and moved to Litchfield in 1843, and lived on Oak Hill several years. He afterwards moved to California, where he died January 10, 1894, at Valley Ford, Sonoma county. Susan, his wife, died in Yarmouthville, Me., December 16, 1851."

Note: Children are listed with birth and death dates and can be found online via Google Books and Archive.org for free as well as Ancestry.com.

The children of John S. Crooker and Susan Curtis were Louisa M, Arnie L, Susan J, Mary E, Zaccheus and John C. Crooker. Note: Arnie is spelled Annie in the History of Litchfield 1895 account, but all the censuses show the child being male, so it must have been a typo in the book. His name is hard to decipher in the censuses.

John Crooker can be found in the 1870 Tomales, Marin County census as a dairy farmer with Catherine and their children William, Huldah and John as well as with his daughters from Susan Curtis marriage, Susan Crooker and Louisa (Crooker) Haskell and his grandson Willie Haskell. He can also be found in 1880 Watsonville, Santa Cruz census as a teamster with children Arnie L., Hulda B., John and Susan (Crooker) Baker. He had two sons named John. One from Susan Curtis marriage, John C. Crooker, who died young and a second with Catherine.

Crooker researchers: If anyone has a marriage record, announcement, estate papers or real estate records to source his marriage to Martha (STAGE) Stone > Saunders please contact me! Thank you kindly.

*** CORRECTION: The 1895 book gave the name ISRAEL, but should read ISAIAH.

NOTE: Interment.net listing for Bloomfield Cemetery taken from a handwritten cemetery reading in pencil from 1950s at the Santa Rosa Historic Library has incorrect data for John S. Crooker. The above data has been thoroughly researched.
