My grandmother had at least nine children that lived. The story goes that when her last child was born, Ila Emily, the doctor warned her to not have any more children or it would kill her. She did get pregnant again, and died in childbirth while delivering twins. Both the children died as well, and they were buried with her in the same coffin. When I was a boy I heard stories from family members who claimed that Kate's ghost made an appearance on the front porch of the house just moments before the doctor emerged to announce that she had died.

My father made a crude homemade headstone in April 1972 and placed it at her grave. When I visited her grave in 2002 I found that someone had replaced the headstone with a simple commercial marble marker. But it shows 1870 as a date of birth which is grossly incorrect. I believe that the original crude stone my father installed might have listed 1890 as her birth year, and that was mistaken for 1870 by whomever replaced the stone.

In May 2010, after 11 years of searching, I found her family on the Appling County census of 1900. She was the daughter of James D. Deen and Mary A. Fiveash. I also found her marriage license that shows she married my then 27 yr-old grandfather on August 11, 1900 in Appling County GA. Kate was eleven years old at the time.
