Susan Ann was born in Rush Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, the youngest of eight children of George and Elizabeth (Fisher) Lott. Her parents were natives of New Jersey, who settled in South Charleston, Ohio, around 1820. They were early members of the Methodist Church.

Susan married Lemuel Davisson in 1835, and after the death of their second infant, they moved north to Pleasant township, where Lemuel had relations on his mother's side.

They had six more children, four of whom grew to adulthood. Susan gradually lost her eyesight, but is remembered sitting in a rocking chair, smoking a pipe, and knitting great numbers of socks, including for soldiers during the Spanish-American War.
