Nevada's father died when she was 12. Three years later, she married William Oliver Knost and moved with him to Wright County, Missouri, where she bore ten children and raised them with little help, as her husband was a railroad man and gone much of the time, and they lived far from any neighbors or family. Her older children remembered her as a loving mother who never raised her voice in anger. At age 31, she died several weeks after the birth of her tenth child. Eight of her children grew to adulthood and were successful in various fields.
