Born to a poor family in northern Iowa who ran a small telephone company. First family member to go to college. BS, MS, PhD from University of Iowa, Ames, Iowa. Enlisted in US Army Airforce and served in World War II in northern Africa, Sicily and Italy fighting Nazis and Fascists. Married Audrey Norma Pardoe after returning from war; completed PhD in Plant Pathology and Mycology. Worked in Hendersonville, North Carolina at an ag. experiment station, then at Penn State University 1954-1959; Monsanto Chemical Corp. 1959-1962. He quit that position when informed that the complany was to come first in his life, even ahead of his family; taking a paycut to 1/3 to return to teaching at California Polytechnic College [later University] in San Luis Obispo, California. Retired, traveled, enjoyed life; raised two children; rescued retired parents from poverty.
