She was a registered nurse. She attended Texas State Teacher's College for Women in Denton TX in 1939, but by the end of her freshman year deceided upon a nursing career. In spring 1941, she entered the nursing program at Parkland Hospital, in Dallas and completed her training in the spring of 1944. Surgical nursing was her chosen field. She worked at the Presbyterian Hospital in Los Angeles, California and Gainesville Sanitarium , Gainesville, Texas.
