Born in Leukersdorf, Sachsen, Germany, Ernst Moritz was the son of Johann Daniel Wilhelm Weiss and Amalie Caroline Aurich.

He was baptized on 10 January 1847 at the local Kirchgemeinde in Leukersdorf.

A veteran soldier of the Franco-Prussian War, Ernst served with the 3rd Company of the Royal Saxon, 5th Infantry Regiment no. 184.

He emigrated in 1891 and settled in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

A master weaver by trade, he was employed by the Wayne Knitting Mills.
