A celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, March 20, 2010, from the Carson & Son Funeral And Cremation Services in Maquoketa, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 P.M. on Friday, March 19, 2010, from the Carson & Son Funeral And Cremation Services in Maquoketa, Iowa. Burial will be at the Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt, Iowa.
Roland Samuel Thompson was born on February 26, 1936 in Clinton, Iowa, to Samuel M. and LaVerna R. (Christiansen) Thompson. He graduated from the Iowa School for the Deaf in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He married Pearl Tharp on April 2, 1960.
Roland was a journeyman printer and linotype setter. Through the years he had worked for the DeWitt Observer, Peoria Journal Star, Cedar Rapids Gazette, and lastly for Peco Industries in Davenport.
Roland was a member of the Iowa Association of the Deaf. He loved trains, airplanes and automobiles, going to the airport and traveling. He also enjoyed horseracing and spending time at the track.
Roland is survived by children, Bill (Felicia) Thompson of Wilmington, DE, Rick Thompson of Davenport, IA, Pam (Allen) Gilbraith of Davenport, IA, Duane Thompson of Davenport, IA and Jon (Missi) Thompson of Davenport, IA; 8 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren; a brother, Merlyn (Pat) Thompson of Davenport, IA; and sisters, Donna Lacey of Maquoketa, IA, Carol (Roger) Heilig of DeWitt, IA and Myrna (Reed) Wisely of Calamus, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a Roland S. Thompson memorial fund has been established.
