My grandfather, and his special story.
My grandfather, Charles James Kammer was born 1874 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Born to parents, father, John Casper Kreuzburg and his mother, Theresia Fessler.
As per affidavit on Charles passport dated 1920. His biological father dies when Charles is just one. A few years later his mother re-marries Ignatz Kammer and accepts his step father's last name as his own.
My grandfather marries his first wife, Kate Baudendistel, October 1893. They have 3 children, Arthur Anthony Kammer, Helen Josephine Kammer and Karl Kammer, who dies after only a few months.
My grandfather becomes a Hardwood lumber salesmen and travels extensively throughout Central America, Canada and parts of the United States. He quickly becomes a very wealthy, and was known to have residences in every location he travels to. Some of these residences include, Cincinnati, Ohio; Toronto, Canada; New York, New York; Philadelphia Pa; Mexico; Nicaraugua etc.
Without divorcing Kate Baudendistel, he marries a second unknown wife. This information can be found on his World War One registration card.
Again without finding any divorce papers, he marries a Anna Whitener, October 20 1920. They move to Canada and establish the Toronto Hardwood Lumber Company Ltd. While Anna is working for my grandfather, Charles marries his forth wife, whom is my grandmother. Vera evelyn Levesque marry June 6 1929 in Montreal Canada. A year later, my father, Charles James Kammer jr is born.
By June 1933 the depression takes it's toll on my grandfather's company and he files for bankruptcy. Less then a year later, he flees for the United States without his family or Anna Whitener. He promises that when he re-establishes himself again, he would have his family move to the Untied States with him. He writes my grandmother often, even 3-4 times a month. He talks about dispair and loneliness and often says he misses his family, especially my father...his son.
By 1936/37 he is found to have married an Ann Seghorn, which would make her his fifth known wife. He is traveling again to parts of Central America.
The last known letter my family has in it's possession, is a letter dated early 1942. The letters stopped after this date. My family assumed he had died.
My research however, has concluded that Charles James Kammer lived another 16 years. He took up residence in New Orleans all that time. His last known occupation, was a checker at Kolbs Restaurant in New Orleans.
This is the story as we know it today, but understand there maybe more to uncover in the future.
