Another Old Settler Passes Away
Mrs. Anna McAuley, nee Shannon, wife of James McAuley, died at Loda, Il., on Monday morning, 6/2/1913 at 3:40 a.m. She was born in Ireland, City of Dublin on 7/16/1838. They were married in Kankakee, Il., on 12/3/1855. She is survived by her husband, James McAuley, 7 children; 5 boys & 2 girls: John D. McAuley, Indianapolis, Ind., Thomas F. McAuley, Moorhead, Mn., Charles I. McAuley, Hunter N. Dakota, William McAuley, Chicago, Joseph H. McAuley, Urbana; Sadie H. Benware, Chicago & Anna B. Kovarick, Chicago. She leaves 17 grandchildren, 9 granddaughters, 8 grandsons. One brother, Thomas Shannon (Sr.) survives.
We cannot say, we will not say,
That she is dead, she is just away,
With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand She passed into a better land All of the children except William were present a the funeral. The services were conducted by Rev. W.F. Healy in the Catholic Church.
Interment in Pine Ridge Cemetery.
Mrs. McAuley was one of our earliest settlers. When her husband first came here there was not a house in Loda. He helped to build the I.C.R.R. & they would have to get their meals at Pera (now Ludlow) & there was only a section house there. Mr & Mrs McAuley were married at Kankakee (Il.) before the first courthouse was built.
