John B. Barrett enrolled and mustered-in as Private, Co. G, 2nd California Cavalry, at San Francisco, California, September 23, 1861. Private Barrett mustered-out, due to the expiration of his term of service, at San Francisco, September 27, 1964.

Came to Nevada in the 1850's and was a lawyer. He became the local Justice of the Peace from 1862 to 1875 when he became ill.

He died December 20, 1879, at age 50 years from cancer and was buried in the Gold Hill Cemetery December 22 during a heavy snow storm. There was a very heavy turnout of his friends and fellow Masons to pay their last respects to this Law Maker of the West. (Gold Hill Evening Star News, December 22, 1879)

The Attached photo is of a Tin Type in the State Archives and I wish to thank them for letting me copy it for Find A Grave. It does not have photographer information on the back but has an old penciled marking that shows "John Barrett J.P. Gold Hill 1877." The photo of his knocked over tombstone was taken during September 2001.
