Joseph Hedrick moved in 1820 with his parents to Rush Co., Indiana and settled on a farm in Richland Twp. At the age of 19 years old, he enlisted to fight in the Black Hawk War of 1832 and became a Ranger to fight the Fox Indians.

He married Margaret Wilson Larimore in New Salem, Rush Co., Indiana on Aug. 18, 1835.He then became a partner in the mercantile business, running a branch store at Milford, Indiana for his father-in-law, Thomas J. Larimore.

In Sept 1844, he and his family, mother, brothers and sisters moved to the then "Promisted Land" of Iowa and settled near the town of Ottumwa in Wapello. County. While living in Iowa Joseph was an active member of the Constitutional Convention. He was a Whig and was nominated for Governor and was defeated by only two votes. Then he was nominated for Congress and was again defeated by a small majority.

In 1848 due to poor health, they moved back to Milford, Indiana. In 1850 he was the Whig candidate for Treasurer of Rush Co., Indiana, but was defeated again. In 1855 he purchased a farm near Milford, Indiana where they resided until his death in 1860.

Joseph Hedrick was a member of Milford, Indiana Lodge #94, F. & A. M. and was Worship Master of the Lodge #94 at the time of his death. He was also a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

Believed to have died of a brain disease that may have been caused by the prolonged use of hair dye.

His medical information: he had keen, gray eyes, dark complexion and hair, which turned to gray very early, was six feet two inches tall, 180 to 200 pounds.

His children are: James M., John W., Nancy C., Elizabeth, Emaline, Thomas J.
