Steve and Effie had a total of 15 children, namely, Milford Felton, Bessie Estella, Virgil Lester, Freddie Stephen, Roy Sherman, Hurchel Edward, Ethel Corenn, Marvin Wayne, Lucille Vernell, Earl Paul Eugene, Elsie Lee, Ralph Johnnie, William Joseph (a/k/a "Billy Joe" or "Bill"), Herman Lewis (a/k/a "Tex") and Beatrice Marie.

Steve married Edna Hurston after Effie passed away in 1945.
