United States Army Officer. An 1834 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, he counted among his classmates future Civil War Union generals Gabriel R. Paul and William S. Ketchum, as well as future Confederate General Goode Bryan. He was appointed as a brevet 2nd Lieutenant in the Corps of Engineers on July 1, 1834, and worked as an assistant engineer on the building of Indiana's Cumberland Road, and in the repairing of fortifications in New York City Harbor. Promoted to full 2nd Lieutenant on September 30, 1836, he worked from 1836 to 1841 on project to improve the Ohio River above Louisville, Kentucky. Promoted to Captain on December 7, 1838, he served briefly at West Point before the Mexican War began. There in his capacity as an Army Engineer, he fought at the September 1846 Battle of Monterey, and in the March 1847 Siege of Vera Cruz. He was brevetted Major, US Regular Army on September 23, 1846 for "gallant and meritorious services in several conflicts at Monterey, Mex." His post-war career saw him engaged in the construction of Fort Delaware on Pea Patch Island in the river separating Pennsylvania and New Jersey, where he was the Superintending Engineer on the project. Except for a brief time spent at Fort Taylor, Florida in 1857, he was engaged in the Fort Delaware project from 1847 until his death there in 1858.
