Herman Bernard ("Barney") Estermann was born in 1833 in Hanover, Germany. In 1854 he traveled from Bremen, Germany to Baltimore, Maryland and on to Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. At that time his occupation was shoemaker. He married Maria Catherin Reisenbeck Estermann on November 16, 1858 at Saint Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Cincinnati. Their children were Catherine "Kate" Estermann, Anna Maria "Annie" Estermann Kruthaup, Mary Esterman Kathman, Henry J. "Harry" Esterman, Clara H. Estermann Meiners, and at least two more who died young. In the 1880 census Barney's occupation was saloon keeper. In 1880 the family lived on Warsaw Avenue in Cincinnati. In 1890 he ran a feed store. Barney died of liver cancer at age 59 on January 5, 1893 in Cincinnati and is buried beside his wife in Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Cincinnati. His great-grandson, Thomas J. Donnelly, and a few grandchildren are buried nearby.
