James Clyde, Esq. was the son of John & Elizabeth Clyde, d. age 83y 3m 16d, married first to Hannah Horner (D/o-Joseph Horner), Hannah is buried in Cross Creek Township in Washington Co. PA

James Clyde mar. #1- Hannah Horner (dau of Joseph Horner), moved to Washington Co . PA. Had a daughter who died 12-12-1804. Son, Joseph was born 4-4-1806, mother died after birth. James took Joseph to settlement to be cared for by family members. The 2 lived there from 1806 or1807 to 1840.

James leaves for Lancaster in 1840, and leaves Joseph behind in the settlement. When James lived in Lancaster, he was known as Young Squire Clyde. It is there a young lawyer (Buchanan) was the young Squire's council. James was a life long friend of Pres. Buchanan.

James then mar. #2 Susan Downing 1841 and they return to the settlement until his death in 1866. He was also known as Old Squire Clyde. James lived at the corner of Rt. 512 and Locust Rd.

On stone:
My flesh shall slumber in the ground
Till the last trumpet's joyful sound;
Then burst the chains with sweet surprise,
And in my Saviour's image rise.
