Son of Leroy Brannon and Emma Harmon.

His name is spelled as Branham in his service records and therefore spelled that way on his monument.


William claimed to be much older when he left for the war. According to his sister Liza's descendants, she and their mother were the last ones to watch him leave home, whistling as he walked away.


Enlisted in the Union Army on June 19, 1863 in Somerset, Kentucky for three years then was assigned to the 2nd TN Volunteer Inf.


Captured at Rogersville, TN on Nov. 6, 1863. Treated in a hospital in Richmond, VA and again in April of 1864, in Andersonville, GA prison camp.


Cause of death is listed as anasarca.
